One of the latest meme trends asks people to tag a friend on an image.
And, the picture used in these memes doesn’t usually meet society’s standard of beauty.
We’ve all been guilty at some point when we have tagged a friend or had a laugh at someone else’s expense, and while most will see it as just a bit of harmless fun, we sometimes forget that the person who appears in the meme actually exists.
One person who has fallen victim to this meme trend is Lizzie Velasquez, a motivational speaker who has given life-changing talks and who was born with a rare disease that causes problems with the way the body grows and prevents her from storing body fat.
The 27-year-old recently discovered the meme of herself with the words: “Michael said he would meet me behind this tree for a bit of fun.”
‘He’s running late, would someone please tag him and tell him I’m still waiting?’
Understandably finding the meme with her photo hurt Lizzie’s feelings, so she decided to share the meme she found with her thousands of fans.
More than 130,000 people have reacted to Lizzie’s post with many commenting in support of Lizzie, including her mum, who wrote: ‘As Lizzie’s mom this hurts beyond words. But I stand with you to say spread love PLEASE. Love you Lizzie!’
