There is no doubt that Johnny Depp is a great movie star but for the second year running Depp has topped Forbes annual list of the top 10 most overpaid actors in Hollywood – and it’s no great surprise.
The list was compiled by Forbes’ analysts who examine the last three movies (minimum of 2,000 screens) an actor has starred in before June. Calculating the operating income of those films and then dividing that amount by the actor’s estimated pay it then gives us a number for final return on investment.
Using that model, Depp has returned roughly $2.80US for each dollar he was paid.
Depp’s last film “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” only brought in $300 million worldwide on a $170 million dollar budget, making the movie a flop.
Unfornatuatly for all involved, the film opened at the same time that a restraining order has ordered against Depp after his then spouse Amber Heard alleged he had abused her.
Last year the Depp starred in the comedy “Mortdecai” and crime drama “Black Mass,” which grossed $47 million and $100 million worldwide.
Adam Sandler, who topped the 2013 and 2014 Forbes overpaid actor lists, was sixth this year with Julia Roberts being the only woman on the list.
Here are the top 10 overpaid actors this year for each $1 paid:
- Johnny Depp returns $2.80
- Will Smith returns $5
- Channing Tatum returns $6
- Will Ferrell returns $6.50
- George Clooney returns $6.70
- Adam Sandler returns $7.60
- Mark Wahlberg returns $9.20
- Leonardo DiCaprio returns $9.90
- Julia Roberts returns $10.80
- Bradley Cooper returns $12.10
Depp is due to appear next in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales.” [WPGP gif_id=”354″ width=”600″ credit=””]
