Wagner Lima was a 34-year-old Paraguayan cowboy from Brazil who died on New Year’s Day in a motorbike accident. And everyone who knew the man knew he was best mates with his horse, Sereno.
Wagner’s brother Wando knew how much the horse meant to his brother and thought it was only right to have Sereno right alongside family and friends at the funeral.
Wando told Globo News:
“This horse was everything to him. It was as if the horse knew what was happening and wanted to say goodbye.”
On Tuesday, Wando led a heartbreaking march to where his brother was to be buried in the city of Cajazeiras, Brazil. Sereno marched with them.
But family and friends were shocked when they saw the emotional reaction from the horse as it got close to the hearse carrying Lima’s coffin. It was like Sereno could smell the scent of his best friend.
Wando told the news station: “All the way to the cemetery, he would whimper and beat with his hooves on the ground.”
Sereno then stooped down and placed his head on the casket, saying goodbye for the last time.
Sereno won’t be going through the grieving process alone, Wando and his family are now taking care of his brother’s horse.
